Who is Cook Pu?

While there can be many Cook Pu but the one that Internet is now searching for is a character from HIMYM (How I met your mother), a popular comedy periodic from cbs.

The character is Architecture Professor Ted Mosby’s student. Popular for all the jokes that can be played on the name. Character is played by Hong Chau.

Believe it or not, but Cook Pu is a more searched for keyword than Apple’s iPad. Wow!

Short-Sight of Short URLs

Now a days we are flooded with a crowd of short URLs that inadvertently  find their way to Blogs, Posts and other such places. By nature, these URLs do not disclose the source of the content. However, once ported to a larger medium like a Blog or Forum, they need to disclose their final target. A need of the hour is to get some Plugin or Service that can either Re-Expand them to original or Tooltip them with the original URL where word limit is not a constraint.

Example: http://bit.ly/b2NoCF becomes http://bit.ly/b2NoCF (with tooltip, hover to view) or http://timeline-studios.com/blogs/2010/02/i-would-have-loved-if-my-mobile-and-tv-did-this/ (complete URL)

A very interesting way of representing that data. Apart from that, a very interesting data in itself.

An Eco friendly Washing Machine

For a long time I have had this thought in mind. Why can’t washing machines have 2 water inlets, separate for Hot and Cold since so many users now have Solar Heaters at home.

How it would help:

  1. Reduction in energy costs when heated wash is used.
  2. Most washing soaps are designed to work in room temperature, and this would allow the machine to manipulate and chose a water temperature.
  3. Definitely green.

For the sake of redundancy, the heater part should remain. After all, we do not really get the sun shining all the time.

Dual input for a washing machine to save energy.

How many of you use Top Sites on Safari?

Just curious, how many actually use this feature in Safari?

Top Sites is a feature in safari where it gives you a thumbnail display of all frequently visited websites. Although the function is very simple, the display however is fantastic like all things apple.

P2 from Automattic

P2 Theme for WordPress

The P2 theme from Automattic is probably the best theme there till date for an active blog. It supports inline comments and posting right from the homepage itself. The inline comments on this blog is also inspired by the P2 theme, in future would probably style P2 to run on this blog.

I would have loved if my Mobile and TV did this

I have an internet enabled phone, which I use primarily to talk (90%), text (8%), click images of vague animals and impromptu kid actions (2%). I did try using it to receive my emails, at least read through them or reply back but the lack of screen space is just a killer.

That’s how this thought came up.

What if the Mobile and the TV could talk. Which means I use the mobile to type and navigate while the TV did the display part. I would not mind a 640×480 display on the HD screen, but it would be larger, take less time, and much more user friendly just by the sheer size of it.

Unification of the Gadgetification of Life

Interconnectivity

This is needed in the very near future. Devices would be categorized as Handheld, Storage, Display, Input, Output, Network apart from all others that may be there in the Kitchen. Let’s just leave them for now for the sake of ease (that’s my ease). Diagram displays the possible interconnectivity and overlap.

Overlaps

The problem comes when there are innumerable redundancies. For instance: a cell phone can be used to control a television, home theater and others thus reducing a remote. Music can be streamed to portable devices for the larger part, thus reducing the need for large data drives on them. Movies can be viewed directly on the TV screen on demand, instead of crouching in front of a Laptop to get the latest from Youtube, and all this has to get simple.

Not right now, but very soon.

Save the TIger Campaign

It seems there is a Campaign on supported by our cricketers and a popular mobile company to save the Tigers that are left in India. An alarming 1411. The Campaign in it’s true ad world way shows a tiger cub waiting for his / her mother followed by a gun shot echoing through the forest. Nice, very touching, works to get ones attention to the tigers. But is that where we want the attention to go to?

No

  1. We need this bulk of attention to be diverted to those who poach tigers, those who buy their byproducts and those who flaunt tiger skins in their homes, including the fake ones. Logic says, if you buy the fake one, you definitely long for the original.
  2. The bulk of the problem is their diminishing habitat. It’s a large territorial cat that needs lots of wild space. A stringent control of Human population within the country would surely help reverse effects in the long run. Maybe it’s already too late for the tiger, but the Rhinos and the Ghariyals are going to go soon.

Let’s put down some ideas wherein we can come up with some innovative and plausible solution that would actually help rather than exploiting a lone cub to market ourselves.

Do comment in your ideas. The original video from Youtube is included.

concept Grid with Tablets

Carrying forward from my earlier post here, we can create Tablets that not only help in personal computing and handheld computing, but also extend visually and physically. Something thats a physical Grid as well as a computing Grid.

Tablets in Grid mode. One gets 10 screen space (assuming that the screen borders are minimal) and 5 processors.

The idea maybe a little over the top, but things should aim at heading this way.

Why me no iPad

Apple – iPad – The best way to experience the web, email, and photos.

Well this might be a little too early to say as I may give in to the looks and the design of the iPad sometime soon as soon as its stable and available in India, but I still have my doubts over the whole Tablet concept.

We all wrote on a paper with pen a little more than 2 decades back when Bill and Steve started selling us stuff so that we hit keys instead of flaunting a Pen. In came a PC and then a Laptop. All that was to replace and make stuff easier for us to handle. Little after this Apple got in the Newton and we all loved it, it could schedule and recognize handwritten stuff and let you even scribble aimlessly, and then faded into oblivion.

Then came the Tablet PCs/Laptops which had this screen that swiveled and frankly thats what was the weak point. Sooner or later, they would become lose, wobble etc.

And we are back to the ‘no physical keyboard’ era again with iPhones (and it’s million copies from LG, Sony, Samsung etc.) and now a larger one in the iPad.

But the basic is missing. The ease of having a separate Input and Output device makes like a lot easier. physical memory takes care of the rest, much like the stick shift in a car. QWERTY was perfect.

Hence This. A two screen solution is probably a way to go.

Dual Screen tablet

Although Gizmodo has revealed something similar by Microsoft, I would rather wait for the Apple one.

dumb question of the day!

How fast do you need to run to avoid getting run over by a train?

The answer seems to be simple upfront that you cannot outrun the train and sort of come under it and perish permanently. But the actual answer depends on how fast the train is going actually? If its running a bit slower than you can run, chances are you will survive.

Just a thought!!

Arithme

Arithme is a company that deals in internet and intranet related security and anti-spam software. The requirement was to create a website that’s easily scalable to accommodate newer products as well as easy to maintain at the same time.

The Initial ideas were created to suit any HTML + CSS environment. In the later stages the same was ported onto WordPress as a Theme for easy maintenance and upgrades.

The product pages are configured as pages within WordPress CMS structure. Posts related to a particular product and categorized as a particular product will appear within a product page as well.

The Homepage is created and themed in a way to draw out content from 2 pages hidden within the WordPress structure. Latest News and Blog Posts can also be accessed directly from the Homepage.

Although this system has some limitation with the number of Items the navigation bar can hold, it still manages to look elegant and attractive reducing navigation clutter on the screen.

Working with WordPress

The site uses the Page structure within WordPress to associate to different sections and products. The pages and sub-pages structure has been used extensively to create the depths within the website. The user has an option to upload a single banner image for every page. They also have options to upload 5 special images per page along with images in line text. This has been done to accommodate any need to have special flowcharts.

The post structure can be categorized to appear within a page as well. Related posts to a product can be made to pop up on the product’s page itself. The post structure also supports the News and Blog sections of the website. View the gallery to get a basic idea.

Goblin Cave

Designing for creative people is always tough. They have their own ideas, we have our own ideas. Although we may be better at doing the web stuff, we cannot always ignore the ideas coming from the other side. Goblin’s website was such a situation. We were rigid to keep within the budget, they wanted something that was not rigid at all. The site is not fully online as yet. Based on wordpress, we are still waiting for the data to go in.

The website has a very quirky homepage that is static and directs to various sections of the CMS driven site

The same theme and minimalist approach is carried over to the inside pages as well

Each inside page has a specific image and animation attached to it to appear as a header and footer. A right side floating menu provides the navigation.

The website

The final website is a result of very creative thinking coming from Goblin and us trying to blend that into very straight forwards and rigid CMS structure. From the homepage the website does not look like a wordpress themed site, and that was one of the requirements.

Easy updates and inclusion of videos were the next requirement. Youtube was the chosen platform for videos and there were to be embedded within each post for viewing. Goblin is yet to fill all the dat on to their website.

Buddibot

Buddibot is a service that rides on Wowwee’s Rovio Bot to aid ailing and aged people. The Rovio is a bot capable of traversing through spaces and speaking out to people. The Rovio web interface allows relatives and others shared on the network to view and speak to the people that are being looked after by the Rovio.

The website homepage is simple and straight forward. A single graphic attempts at describing the subscription process.

A pop up flash animation further clarifies the utility part of the website

The simplicity and clarity is carried over to all the pages within the website

Workings

Buddibot is a subscribed service which enables a user to talk to their near and dear ones through the Rovio. It’s just like talking on Skype or any other VOIP protocol, except in this case you can drive the camera to your near and dear ones and then start a conversation. Rovio does not need to be plugged in all the time and works through Wifi signals available within the house. To function properly, the Rovio does need a full time internet connection and a Wifi router.

The website allows the user to store photos, store music and create playlists of music and podcasts that can be played back over the Rovio. The Rovio also gives out alarms that are stored and set on the Buddibot website. Medical reminders are one of it’s primary usage.

Talentsprint

A company in Hyderabad dealing in exactly what it sounds like. They needed a solution that was easy to maintain, uncomplicated and yet elegant. The solution was a simple website created with WordPress as a CMS. The theme is then customized to have different layouts for different pages. The post feature of the blog engine is used to punch in News and Testimonials.

The homepage carries minimal content, recent News Posts and Testimonials. A large image brings in the youthfulness to the page

Content in pages are kept to a minimal and focussed

How?

Simple, first we created a static version and got the client’s approval on the whole idea and look and feel. Meanwhile we got them accustomed to WordPress as well to use it regularly and upload their data. Next step was to create the templates. We created custom templates for each type of information and there were options of what the client would like to show in their sidebar, another text blurb or just an image or something completely different.

Will all these options frozen, a theme was created that would allow them to update and upload their regular feeds easily. View the screen shots in the gallery for details.
